Podcasts – and their marketing potential – came under the spotlight at an event in Poole.

Latest figures from Ofcom, the communications regulator, reveal that 7.1m people in the UK now listen to podcasts every week.

That’s one in eight people and an increase of 24 per cent in 12 months – and more than double over the past five years.

The Evolve Live evening brought together three podcasters – Sarah Ali Choudhury (The Curry Queen), Mark Cribb (Humans of Hospitality) and Evolve’s Warren Munson (Evolve to Succeed) – together with Andy James and Kelly Butler of Podcast Labs, for talks and a panel discussion.

The event itself was broadcast as a live podcast.

Key takeaways about podcasts included:

  • Great marketing and commercial possibilities.
  • Encourages creativity and creates connection and loyalty with customers.
  • Relatively cheap marketing tool.
  • Offers opportunities to meet and chat in-depth with other business leaders that might not otherwise be connected with.

Andy and Kelly gave invaluable insight and tips into the equipment and techniques behind perfecting your podcast stressing it’s not just a case of sitting in a room with a microphone.

Warren, pictured below, noted that a successful podcast is not only the result of the interviewer and subject but the team behind it who are responsible for editing and marketing each episode.

He said: “Entering into the world of podcasts has been incredibly exciting.

“Not only have I had the privilege of listening to other business leaders’ stories and be on the receiving end of their honesty and wisdom, I’ve also learnt new skills.

“Receiving positive feedback from numerous people both inside and outside my network is fantastic, and I’ve already seen the benefits of engagement in the business community.

“It really is a great tool.”

Poole-based Evolve is a community for forward-thinking, ambitious entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Evolve Live was held at Evolve’s event space in Ashley Cross.

The Evolve to Succeed podcast is available on iTunes, Spotify and Stitcher.
