Lucy Cooper, City Manager at CityFibre, answers your questions about CityFibre’s £35m private investment which is transforming Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole into some of the most digitally connected locations on the planet.

Question: CityFibre construction is currently ongoing in Bournemouth. Can you tell me a bit about your process?

Answer: Minimising inconvenience and disruption is a priority for our street teams and so we always look to fully utilise existing ducts and aerial connections where possible.  If we are digging, then we aim to be past your property within a couple of days. The advantages of this project far outweigh any disadvantages with full fibre transforming the way we work and live. To date, CityFibre, as the UK’s third national digital infrastructure platform, has identified 62 towns and cities to benefit from its rollout and we have already connected thousands of public sector sites including hospitals, GPs, schools and community venues.

Question: What can your network give to me as a resident and/or business?

Answer: The quality of our full fibre network is world-class – this means that the service you receive via our network will empower you to do more, and far faster with speeds up to 1,000Mbps, with no buffering, ever!

Question: What will your network provide the town?

Answer: Our £35m private Gigabit City investment will provide Bournemouth with a myriad of economic benefits, including £100m in private household benefits, £43m smart city benefits and £21m in direct build benefit.

Question: How can I sign-up?

Answer: CityFibre is a digital infrastructure network provider, meaning that you cannot buy access to our network directly from us.  However, across the UK CityFibre is already working with launch partner Vodafone to deliver next generation broadband services, and TalkTalk is expected to join the network soon. You can submit an enquiry directly to Vodafone here.

Question: Where can I find more information about where you are building?

Answer: You can register your interest via our gigabit-cities page on our website.  We will then contact you when we have built a connection on your street and advise you of next steps.

Question: What are you providing that is different to Openreach and Virgin?

Answer: Only 11% of the UK currently has access to what we call ‘full fibre’. By providing full fibre directly to your property, rather than just to the cabinet which is more often than not the case, you can enjoy equal download and upload speeds up to 1,000mb (1 Gigabit). Also, our network is passive meaning that the cabinets we use in your street do not use energy to work. Once CityFibre’s build is complete, Bournemouth will have a world-class digital infrastructure, transforming the way in which we live and work.
