Residents from Dorchester’s Maiden Castle House care home have done their part for an animal charity in Wareham.

Together they knitted some cosy blankets for the animals of Margaret Green Animal Rescue, which they donated to the team alongside a cheque for £1,000 to support their work.

The charity was chosen by Care South, the not-for-profit which runs Maiden Castle House, as the latest beneficiary of the Chairman’s 2020 Fund.

It was established to give back to community groups, services and organisations which directly benefit Care South’s residents and staff.

Joining the residents to present the cheque were Penny Sargeant, board secretary for Care South, as well as Maiden Castle House manager Ashley Smith and activities lead Emma Norman.

Penny said: “At Care South, the residents in our care greatly benefit from their visits to meet the animals at Margaret Green Animal Rescue, as well it bringing back happy memories of the pets they had throughout their lives.

“We’re so pleased that we could give something back to support the fantastic work that the charity do to look after animals in need of re-homing.”

Sybil, who lives at Maiden Castle House, said she was impressed with the rabbit enclosure and the thought that had gone into making it a nice home for the animals.

And Joan, another resident, said: “It’s a lovely place for the animals to live before they’re adopted.”

Nigel Mason, chief executive of Margaret Green Animal Rescue, added: “The residents from Care South’s homes always arrive with huge smiles on their faces.

“They look forward to seeing all the animals here and making a fuss of them.

“We’re thrilled to receive such a generous donation from Care South, which will go towards helping all the animals in our care.”

Maiden Castle House provides specialist residential, respite, and dementia care, with a daily programme of events and communal lounges overlooking a landscaped garden.
