20 Questions: Trethowans' Mark Nixon takes the hotseat this week

By Sam Pither editor@dorsetbiznews.co.uk

Published: July 5, 2023 | Updated: 4th July 2023

Welcome back to another 20 Questions, the weekly format which sees us posing some of Dorset’s leading lights a series of part serious/part questions.

This week in the hotseat is Mark Nixon, Corporate Partner at Trethowans.

He’s not a Liverpool fan but his childhood hero was John Barnes, he loves the smell of wild garlic and his first record was Michael Jackson’s Bad…

What’s your favourite TV show?

There are so many but it will always be hard to beat Only Fools and Horses.

Who would you like to share a car with?

I fancy a bit of car pool karaoke so it will have to be James Corden.

The best bit of my job is…?

Working with business owners, particularly when you are in the throes of a deal. You build up a real camaraderie as part of the process and a number of the clients I have worked with have become good friends.

And the worst?

When a deal falls over, especially when it is outside anyone’s control.

Who was your childhood hero?

I am not a Liverpool fan but John Barnes was an absolute hero of mine growing up. I still remember to this day an enormous poster of him at my junior school wearing the silver Candy away stip.

What’s your favourite smell?

Wild garlic on a nice spring walk.

Where’s your favourite place in Dorset?

Anywhere on the Purbecks. I could easily never leave there.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a career?

Make sure you enjoy it and are prepared to work hard to achieve what you want.

What was your first record/CD?

Michael Jackson’s Bad

What gets you angry?

Traffic!

Do you have a favourite piece of music?

Ironically given the above answer, Stereophonics – Traffic

What are the qualities you look for in a new employee?

Our people and culture are very important and so alongside making sure they have the right attitude and the right qualifications for the job, making sure that they will be the right fit (and that we are the right fit for them) is key.

What’s your favourite food or dish?

I have so many but scrambled eggs on toast is a simple favourite.

Steamed sponge pudding and custard or a plate of melon?

Steamed sponge pudding and custard

Name the best thing about living/working in Dorset?

There are so many, especially when the weather is good. Beaches, cycling, walking, rivers its all here!

If you were Prime Minister for the day what would be the first thing you do?

Tear it all up and start again.

What’s your biggest frustration?

Traffic again. Especially if I am running late.

Where’s your favourite holiday location?

Marrakech was pretty special, but equally sitting on a beach in Kefalonia was also pretty amazing.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

I have still got so much to achieve in my current role, but one day I would like to do something very different. May be work in woodland conservation or something like that.

What would you like to be remembered for?

If my kids remember me as a good Dad I would be happy with that.
