Each week we shine the spotlight on a member of Dorset’s business community and ask him, or her, for answers to our part fun/part serious questionnaire. This time…
He’d like to share a car with Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones; hates lateness with a passion; chooses freshly cut grass because it reminds him of his school days in Kenilworth and wishes to be remembered as a good father, a passionate photographer and someone who knew his way around a fretboard.
Photographer Andy Scaysbrook occupies the 20 Questions’ hot seat.

Question: What is your favourite TV show?
Answer: Family Guy. Always makes me laugh out loud and touches on subjects that shouldn’t be touched on. Love it.
Q: Who would you like to share a car with?
A: Keith Richards. Road trip across the States. A couple of beaten up Telecasters in the back and the open road with Keef. Priceless.
Q: The best bit of my job is…?
A: Getting to meet and photograph so many fantastic people from the famous to the infamous. Photography has taken me all over the world and I’m hugely grateful for the life experiences it has given me.
Q: And the worst…?
A: Copyright abuse! I have my work tracked by an agency to see if it’s being used illegally. I get daily notifications about my images being used without permission. Most are in countries where they do not recognise copyright, ie, China, Russia, India. It’s a tough life for a photographer these days and the last thing any of us need is to have our work being stolen and used without payment or permission.
Q: Who was your childhood hero?
A: Tommy Hutchinson, Coventry City footballer. A fantastic player and a lovely guy. I had posters of him all over my wall when I was a kid. I got the chance to meet Tommy to shoot his portrait for a forthcoming exhibition and he was an absolute gent. My hero.
Q: What’s your favourite smell?
A: Freshly cut grass. It reminds me of summer days at school in Kenilworth.
Q: Where’s your favourite place in Dorset?
A: There are so many wonderful places and we live in such a beautiful part of the world but for me it has to be the Purbecks.
Q: What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a career?
A: If you want to succeed you’re going to need to give it your all. Make sacrifices. Learn to deal with defeat and setbacks and never give up. I had a football coach who used to tell us that we never learnt anything from winning, we had to suffer defeat and absorb those lessons to really grow as a team and he was right. If you’re going to dedicate your life to achieving a professional goal then there will be many defeats along the way. It’s how you come back from them that matters most.
Q: What was your first record/CD?
A: Pin Ups by David Bowie. My uncle Chris gave it to me when I was a child. I know every note, lyric and guitar riff off by heart. That album was the reason I wanted to learn how to play guitar.
Q: What gets you angry?
A: How long have you got? Liars and Coldplay!
Q: Do you have a favourite piece of music?
A: I’ve played guitar for years and music plays a big part in my life, both performing and listening. Trying to name a favourite piece of music is almost impossible as there are just so many I could choose from. If I have to name a few then Frank Zappa’s guitar solo in Yo’ Mama and Fleetwood Mac performing Rhiannon live in 1976, Unreal performance by the band – and the Talk Talk album The Colour of Spring, a magnificent musical masterpiece.
Q: What are the qualities you look for in a new employee?
A: I don’t employ people but I have people assist me on shoots. First thing is be on time, I hate lateness with a passion.
Q: What’s your favourite food or dish?
A: I will eat anything, with the exception of sprouts! I love Asian food.
Q: Steamed sponge pudding and custard or a plate of melon?
A: Melon all day long.
Q: Name the best thing about living/working in Dorset?
A: The landscape of the county is breathtaking. It’s an absolute privilege to live here
Q: If you were Prime Minister for the day what would be the first thing you do?
A: Fund the NHS properly starting with a proper pay rise for our incredible health workers who deserve so much more than they get. I’d then sack most of the useless muppets in the cabinet and bring in the real Muppets who I’m convinced would do a better job and I’d ban Coldplay!
Q: What’s your biggest frustration?
A: Rude and disrespectful people, there are way too many about for my liking. My second biggest frustration is the tiny playing budget Mark Robins, Coventry City Manager has to work with every season.
Q: Where’s your favourite holiday location?
A: Cuba. I’ve been taking photographers on photography workshops to Cuba for the last eight years. It saddens me greatly to see what’s going on in Cuba at the moment. The Cuban people are a rare breed, tough, enterprising, friendly, immensely talented and brave.
Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?
A: I’ll be 69 so that seems like a good time to be looking back and hopefully asking myself : “Wow, did all that really happen?”
Q: What would you like to be remembered for?
A: A good father, a passionate photographer and someone who knew his way around a fretboard. That’ll do for me.
