More than £1,000 raised for the JTYAF at Crane Valley Captains Day
A Captains Charity Fun Day at Crane Valley Golf Club raised more than £1,000 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF).
Held before the current lockdown, 26 teams braved the elements at the Verwood course.
Pete Thornton, a JTYAF Trustee, also joined Shani Bancroft, Ladies Captain; Paul Rowbottom, Men’s Seniors Captain, and John Astley, Men’s Captain, for his first round of golf for many years.
A total of £1,045 was raised for the JTYAF which has been chosen as the Charity of the Year by the three captains.
Pete said: “This fantastic total would not have been possible without the support of all those who took part.
“Special thanks must go to the volunteers whose time and effort made this event possible.”

Pete and Linda Thornton also met up with James, one of the Crane Valley juniors, who received a JTYAF award last year.
He was proud to be supporting the charity day as his bursary has enabled him to develop as a golfer and work towards his ambition to play at professional/semi-professional standard.
Since his JTYAF award, James has reduced his handicap to an impressive 13 at just 15 years old.
Pete said: “The three Crane Valley captains have shown tremendous commitment and support for the JTYAF.
“Despite these challenging times with lockdowns and restrictions they have organised two charity events and raised in excess of £2,000.
“They are a fabulous bunch of people and we can’t thank them enough.”
Based in Ferndown, the JTYAF was founded in memory of Lieutenant John Thornton, a young Royal Marines officer, who was tragically killed in Afghanistan at the age of 22.
His foundation encourages and supports local young people to ‘climb as high as they can dream’, by providing scholarships and bursaries for their training and personal development in the pursuit of their ambitions.
The charity has no paid staff, no premises and is run on a purely voluntary basis.
Since 2008 more than £750,000 has been awarded to nearly 2,000 young people.
