Boiler Room Records opens second store in Poole

Boiler Room Records, the Poole-based record store that has been buying and selling vinyl records for more than 30 years, has opened its second store in the town.

The new outlet, at 16 Kingland Crescent, will only sell new items while the flagship store in Poole Old Town will continue to sell both new and used records and CDs.

Boiler Room Records started out as a humble market stall before moving, 15 years later, to a bricks and mortar shop.

In 2019, Boiler Room Records underwent a major rebrand and fit out of the store, and launched its online shop.

The business now stocks new releases from all major and indie labels while continuing to buy and sell used vinyl records and CDs.

Owner Mark Northey said: “We are excited to expand our business and offer a new shopping experience to our customers.

“We hope to continue providing a unique and diverse selection of records to the Poole community for many more years to come.”

Neighbouring Kingland retailers helped with the new store.

Wild Roots, owned by Hope Dean, displayed a range of its plants and Viper Cocktails, owned by Carl Hankey, provided drinks for the store’s launch party.

The new shop also received support from neighbouring businesses Jay & Co, owned by Jay Blades, and Restored Retro, owned by Steve Wyatt.

Edgar Wright unveiled as first Patron of The Mowlem

Award-winning English filmmaker Edgar Wright has been named as the first Patron of The Mowlem in Swanage.

Born and raised in Dorset, he recalled happy memories seeing films at the theatre after visiting Swanage last year, posting to his 645,000 Instagram followers: “So glad it’s still here and showing movies. First time stepping in here in 41 years!”

Now 48, Edgar is best-known for his comedic Three Flavours Cornetto film trilogy; Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007) and The World’s End (2013).

His local connections also include attending Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design where he received a National Diploma in Audio-Visual Design before going on to make his first feature film, A Fistful of Fingers, shortly after in 1995.

In 2018 the new renamed Arts University Bournemouth awarded him an Honorary Fellowship.

He’s also credited with co-writing and directing the cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010), the action film Baby Driver (2017), the music documentary The Sparks Brothers (2021) and the psychological horror film Last Night in Soho (2021).

Paul Angel, Chair of The Mowlem Institute Charity, said: “Edgar is one of the most distinctive and influential filmmakers working in the UK today and it was fantastic to find out The Mowlem was his childhood cinema.

“We’ve been working hard to generate a feeling of renewal and excitement around The Mowlem.

“What can be more exciting than having Edgar Wright as our Patron.”

Back of the net as investment management firm sponsors soccer kit

Investment management firm O-IM is investing in the future of sport at a Dorset school.

It is sponsoring football team shirts at Ferndown Middle School as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment.

Lewis Hamm, Co-Founder and Chief Executive, said: “We’re particularly passionate about supporting the local community, especially given the growing interest from young girls in football following the Lionesses’ Euro campaign.

“We are excited to see these talented young athletes grow and thrive under the guidance of their dedicated teacher, Simon Higgins.”

They had more than 35 years’ combined experience at J.P. Morgan.
