Eco and fitness warriors join forces for coastal beach clean

Boutique gym R1SE Bournemouth and not for profit Coacoara Foundation are joining forces for a beach clean-up tomorrow, Saturday October 9.

Starting at Bournemouth Pier at 7am, all are welcome to come and join in for a different kind of workout.

R1SE was founded this year by entrepreneurs and hospitality and fitness specialists Ty Temel and Jamie Whisken.

Ty said: “It is cool that we can partner in this initiative with the Coacoara Foundation.

“Jamie and I are keen for the impact of our new venture R1SE to escalate way beyond just the physical building in Bournemouth centre and enrich our community.

“We are both local lads and that has always been our vision. Sustainability is one of our key values.”

The Coacoara Foundation mission is  ‘to reduce and eventually eliminate all single use plastics being used on a day to day basis, especially within the household.’

Founder Liam Ulla, pictured left, said, “We have been doing beach cleans along the coast for some time now.

“It is a direct way of positively impacting our local environment.

“R1SE is a fantastic new venture and it will be great to see the whole team getting involved along with the community they have culminated in a short space of time.”

Jamie, Co-founder of R1SE, said: “We absolutely love our coast, especially Bournemouth Beach, where we held R1SE on the Beach earlier this year and more recently workshops with TRX UK.

“We want the community vibe to extend beyond the beach clean, so invite all these heroes to come up to The Hangout at R1SE after (in the Triangle) where there will be a goody bag waiting for them and 25 per cent off their breakfast.”

PC Simon gets on his bike for the Steve Bernard Foundation

Poole-based PC Simon Young raised £526.25 for the Steve Bernard Foundation after cycling 100 miles to raise funds for the charity.

Simon said: “After missing out on the Ride London due to the pandemic, I decided to enter the New Forest 100 mile tour for a close family friend, Steve Bernard who lost his life at such a young age.

“I grew up with Stevie and attended a number of Wolves games with him and our dads so I was proud to be able to support the charity created in his name.

“As a serving police officer and a dad of two young girls, finding time to train for this event was difficult.

“I managed my days by cycling into work each morning and then after a 12 hour shift cycle home with a few extra miles & hills added to it.

“I’m pleased to say that I completed the event in under six hours and, more importantly, raised over £500.00 for my mate’s charity which will help them continue doing such good work in our community of which I am proud to serve in.”

Simon presented the cheque to Tony Bernard, Director and Trustee of the Steve Bernard Foundation which has now raised more than £500,000 for over 400 sporting projects.

It’s back! Rotary Dorset Bike Ride returns this weekend

Cyclists are urged to take part in this year’s Rotary Dorset Bike Ride which is held on Sunday, October 10.

It will start and finish at Longthorns Campsite next to Monkey World near Wareham.

Proceeds go to Cancer Research UK.

Five routes will be available – 22, 35, 55, 70 and 108 miles in length.

If you haven’t already registered then you can turn up on the day.

The original Cancer Research Dorset Bike Ride started from Lulworth Castle on 2010 and attracted about 250 riders.

Rotary took over its running in 2012 and it’s since raised more than £300,000.

This year is particularly poignant for event organiser, Richard Burnett, who was diagnosed with cancer late last year.

He said: “While some of my close family have known cancer, it was a huge surprise to find out I had prostate cancer.

“This gave me renewed vigour to support Cancer Research UK through the Rotary Dorset Bike Ride.

“While we had to cancel the 2019 event due to Covid, I was determined that this year’s event would take place.”
