A charity taxi that is driving around Bournemouth and Poole has already raised £6,000 – and is hoping to meet a £15,000 target.

The black cab is the latest fundraiser by the BC Club, a group of businessmen that raises money for charity.

Each member has to drive the LTI TX II Hackney Carriage for a week – and pay for the privilege of doing so.

Variety Wessex, which provides support for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children, is the chosen charity for the money.

Emblazoned with the logos of members’ businesses, the taxi has become a common sight across the conurbation.

Each week the new driver pays £250 and must do at least 150 miles, as well as making one upgrade to the car.

With 40 members, the BC Club’s taxi will be on the road until at least Christmas, and members of the public are being encouraged to donate through the club’s website.

The latest driver is Matt Annen, of Pure Town Planning, pictured, who took the keys from landlord Glenn Chapman and is the newest member of the club.

The idea was born after club chairman Shan Seewooruthun sold his car and club members bought him the £1,500 taxi as a joke.

Shan, who decided his new motor could be put to good use, said: “The fundraiser is going well with our members taking it in turns to drive the cab.

“As well as paying for the privilege there are various fines issued and we’ve already raised several thousand pounds.

“Charities have been hit hard through Covid by not being able to fundraise and our usual events have not gone ahead.

“This started as a bit of a joke but we know what a valued service Variety Wessex provides and every penny will be used to help people.

“We’d urge the public to give us a toot if they see us – and more importantly donate through the BC Club website.”
