Mission accomplished.
Fiona Knight has successfully completed her bike ride from Land’s End in Cornwall to John O’Groats on the north coast of Scotland.
A total of 1,013 miles cycled in 16 days with 61,394 feet of climb and 18 different overnight stays.
Fiona, a commercial property solicitor with Frettens in Christchurch, undertook the 16-day ride in memory of her Dad, Don, pictured.
The keen golfer suffered a heart attack and died in his sleep shortly after his 80th birthday in 2018.
All proceeds from the ride – £6,000 to date – are going to two charities close to Fiona’s heart, Bournemouth Heart Club (BHC) and CRUSE, the bereavement charity.
Fiona said: “We made it, despite it being 2020 and Covid’s best efforts to disrupt our arrangements, beforehand and en route.
“No punctures or accidents other than a couple of slow tumbles off the bike and a snapped chain on Day 15.
“No cushions required for sitting afterwards!
“We were blessed with amazing weather with rain only on Dartmoor and near Fort William.
“Only a few very cold morning starts in Scotland when I looked like Michelin Woman about to rob a bank with nearly everything covered.
“The great weather highlighted the amazing countryside and scenery that we have in the UK.
“I feel very privileged and grateful to have been able to undertake such an epic adventure and to see the mission through to a successful conclusion after many months of planning and training.”
Fiona, a former President of Bournemouth & District Law Society, began training for the ride in June with a 14-week programme of 47 scheduled rides.
She was accompanied by her friend, Alison Shelton BEM, who now lives in the Vale of Belvoir in Leicestershire.
Alison is known to many in Dorset from her time as Manager and then Chief Executive of SafeWise/StreetWise from 1998 to 2017.
She raised just over £2,500 for her local village hall and church from the ride.
Fiona’s husband Charlie, who coordinated and booked the overnight B&B accommodation, accompanied the duo by car.
Fiona said: “I have been overwhelmed by the support which has come in many ways alongside the good wishes, emails and donations.
“Most importantly, however, the two charities, Bournemouth Heart Club and CRUSE, have benefitted from the enterprise in the sum of £6,000.
“As I have covered all expenses myself, ALL funds raised have gone to the two charities to help support the services they provide which are needed even more in these very difficult times.”
Fiona, pictured left, who lives in Ferndown, is no stranger to challenging cycle rides.
She lost her mum, Joyce, to Alzheimer’s in 2010 and undertook a London to Paris cycle ride to raise funds for that charity.
Called Cycle4Mum, the ride raised more than £13,000.
Fiona’s donation page for her latest adventure remains open here.
