From autoimmune disease patient to published researcher in ten years
Nutritionist Daisy Ilchovska describes it as one of her proudest professional moments.
Nearly a decade after being diagnosed with the debilitating autoimmune disease, she’s become a published researcher in the subject.
Daisy, who now runs an online nutritional therapy clinic – Optimal Health Nutrition – has just had her research published in the respected medical journal, Autoimmunity Reviews.
The topic was ‘Nutritional Intervention in the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis’.
Daisy, whose inspiring story was featured on Dorset Biz News in 2020, said: “Having my research published was one of my proudest professional moments so far.
“I have known for a long time that nutrition can play a huge part in the management of debilitating autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
“Now my peer-reviewed research points to the potential of Vitamin D supplementation, which potentially not only reduces inflammation, but also bone destruction, which accompanies the disease.
“This is secondary research, however, and I do hope there will be some clinical trials soon.”
After the diagnosis at 26 Daisy, now aged 35, was told to take a number of medications including a chemotherapy-like drug for the rest of her life and to expect to become disabled within eight years,.
However, within a few years of the diagnosis, Daisy realised that diet and supplements curbed the pain and the disease progression.
Inspired by her own positive outcomes Daisy embarked on studying for a Masters degree in Nutritional Therapy which, along with the required clinical practice, took her five years to complete.
As part of her final year project, she decided to delve into the latest research regarding nutritional interventions in the management of rheumatoid arthritis.
Daisy now helps clients with autoimmune conditions and other chronic diseases improve health and manage symptoms through dietary, supplementation and lifestyle modifications.

Daisy hopes to be able to present the findings of her research at two science conferences – Athens, Greece, and Osaka, Japan – later this year after receiving invites to both events.

STARS Dorset to run webinar for employers
A webinar for employers to better support and understand the impact of sexual violence and domestic abuse on their staff is held next week.
Sexual Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS Dorset) is running the event on Wednesday February 3 from 12pm to 2pm.
It takes place during Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Week.
The webinar is ideal for those who work in Human Resources or would just like to find out more about the subject.
It will include delegates understanding the impact of trauma and how sexual violence and domestic abuse impacts both on the employee as well as other work colleagues.
Delegates will gain confidence in knowing how to respond to a disclosure in the most safe and appropriate manner for the employee involved with knowledge of how to refer onto specialist services and continue to support the employee.
The webinar will be led by Alison Woodward, Clinical Supervisor for STARS Dorset.
Alison, pictured left, is also a UKCP accredited Psychotherapist and Certified Transactional Analyst.
She works both in private practice in Bournemouth and for STARS Dorset and has developed her experience by working with clients who have symptoms of complex PTSD.

Sexual Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS Dorset) is a free service for anyone of any age or gender who lives, works or studies in Dorset and has experienced any form of sexual violence at any time in their life.
The charity offers four core services: a one to one counselling service, a supportLine, an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor Service (ISVA) and a service specifically for children and young people.

Time running out to vote in Wimborne BID renewal ballot
Time is running out for Wimborne businesses to vote in the Wimborne BID renewal ballot.
It closes on Thursday February 4.
The new business plan is a prospectus not just for post-covid recovery, but to enhance, support and futureproof the business community over the next five years.
Through consultations last year, the BID kept the project areas that businesses felt were working and updated other areas to keep them relevant.
