Dorset is paving the way for responsible innovation through the ‘One Health’ approach, connecting businesses and entrepreneurs to its principles. The Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (DLEP) hosted its annual One Health Conference last week (10 July) in collaboration with Bournemouth University.
The One Health 2024 ‘We Mean Business’ Conference gathered experts from business, academia, and government to explore the commercial applications of One Health. Discussions focused on how businesses can grow while adhering to regulations and meeting consumer demands for socially responsible, ethical, and environmentally friendly product development.
One Health emphasizes the interdependence of human, animal, plant, and environmental health. Recognized by the World Health Organisation, this approach has been championed by Dorset LEP since 2018 to create business opportunities in the region.
Highlighting responsible innovation
The conference underscored the importance of responsible innovation for future business growth.
It encouraged businesses to integrate customer-centered design in new product development while considering ethical aspects throughout the innovation process.
The recent UK Environment Act will impact all new product development, linking closely with One Health principles.
The Act aims to enhance biodiversity, improve air and water quality, boost resource efficiency, and reduce waste, driving a more sustainable approach to business growth.
Cecilia Bufton, Chair of Dorset LEP, contextualized the conference by saying: “The One Health approach combined with responsible innovation is an opportunity for businesses to plan their growth sustainably.
“Conference attendees discussed how a single holistic framework could lead to innovative product development that prioritizes ecosystem health, conserves resources, and reduces pollution and waste.
“We have seen the interconnectedness of human, animal, plant, and environmental health like never before, especially through events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, avian flu, and issues of antimicrobial resistance and waste management.
“Our aim is to foster the conditions for a One Health cluster, and work has already begun to build a One Health Enterprise Network.”
