Don’t stop learning and find interests that generate income.
Just two of the tips to aspiring business owners from entrepreneur Andrew Woodruff.
Born and raised in Poole, the 48-year-old has travelled extensively and found success in diverse sectors ranging from property development to yacht chartering and marketing.
Ten years ago he moved into insulation and green energy, founding Arrow Energy Solutions based in Poole.
A far cry from his first job as a deck hand on a superyacht in the Mediterranean at the age of 18 after studying Business and Finance at Bournemouth & Poole College.
Life at sea propelled him to pursue a degree in Maritime Studies from the Southampton Institute.
Shortly after, Andrew’s career took him to California, where he became involved in yacht racing – a natural progression from his maritime studies.
However, the call of adventure was too strong to resist.
He soon found himself back in the UK, where he explored the telecommunications industry for three years, before transitioning into property investment, buying and selling properties across the country.
By the age of just 25, Andrew had achieved what many dream of – early retirement.
But, rather than rest on his laurels, he embarked on a global adventure, living in South Africa, managing a hostel in Hawaii, and traveling extensively through Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and Southeast Asia.
It was during these travels that the idea of yacht chartering in the Caribbean took hold.
Andrew bought a 60ft sailing boat and began chartering in the British Virgin Islands.
For ten years, he lived the dream, sailing the azure waters, meeting fascinating people and turning his passion into a successful business.
By his late 30s, Andrew returned to the UK, once again starting from scratch and searching for his next big challenge.
His entrepreneurial spirit, honed by years of navigating the unpredictable waters of business and life, led him to the world of marketing.
He invested in a marketing franchise where he developed his web-building and marketing skills.
And it was during this time that he became interested in the insulation industry after creating a printed brochure for a spray foam insulation company.
Recognising a significant market demand, Andrew shifted his focus to cavity wall insulation, eventually developing his own insulation and energy solutions company, Arrow Energy Solutions, based out of Poole.
The company now has a state of the art facility in Fareham, Hampshire, as well as offices in Poole and Bristol.
Andrew said being an entrepreneur was about embracing uncertainty and running with perceived opportunities, even when the outcome is unclear.
He also stressed the importance of having “fingers in lots of different pies” and being comfortable with not knowing where the next income will come from.
