Outstanding engineering projects of all shapes and sizes from across Dorset are being sought for this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards.

The prestigious competition showcases the region’s best civil engineering work with categories for new and re-engineered projects, above and below £3 million.

There are also awards for graduates and apprentices to reflect the bright new talent coming from the South West and special awards recognising community involvement, collaboration and projects making a significant contribution to the region’s society and economy.

Entries are open to projects completed between January 1 and December 31, 2019.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony hosted by writer and broadcaster, Judi Spiers, at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel on Thursday July 2.

People across the region can get involved with the award scheme and vote for their favourite project.

Last year, the People’s Choice Award went to the reconstruction of the Old Wool Bridge, a stone bridge of five arches which crosses the River Frome at Wool in Dorset.

The historic structure, made famous by Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, partially collapsed in 2018 but has now been fully restored.

Miranda Housden, ICE South West Regional Director, said: “Our awards recognise outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West.

“They’ve grown over the last decade into the highest honour for engineering excellence.

“We have an amazing record and history of engineering in our region.

“I’m expecting to see a diverse and interesting mix of projects coming forward as we showcase the difference civil engineering is making to our communities.”

Mel Karam, Chief Executive Officer of Bristol Water and a member of the judging panel, added: “I’m looking forward to seeing civil engineering at its best.

“It’s a chance for us to shout about the fantastic, creative and innovative civil engineering taking place across the South West, providing solutions to society’s problems.”

The deadline for entries is 5pm on Monday March 2, 2020.
