Morebus staff taking part in a national campaign against cancer have been praised by their boss.
Managing Director Andrew Wickham was speaking after driver Wayne Bowld and colleagues swapped uniforms for tutus and crazy socks to promote this year’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign.
Last year Wayne only found out he had a rare blood cancer thanks to the nagging of his workmates.
The 46-year-old grandad thought he had come down with a nasty virus as he finished a shift feeling exhausted and cold and was preparing to go home, sleep and sweat it out.
But his colleagues convinced him to see his doctor. Less than 48 hours later he was given the bombshell news he had leukaemia and told by doctors that if he hadn’t sought medical help he would most likely have died within days.
He’s now in remission after treatment which included three-and-a-half months in hospital, largely in isolation. However, he continues to have regular check-ups and biopsies.
Wayne has also returned to work at Morebus and is a familiar face back behind the wheel.
Stand Up To Cancer is a joint fundraising campaign by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, to help fund vital research.
It is supported by a host of stars including Davina McCall, Alan Carr, Maya Jama, Greg Rutherford and Joe Lycett.
A ‘Fortnight of Fundraising’ gets underway from this Friday October 11 to 25. A free fundraising pack is available with ideas on how to raise money at work, home or school.
Mr Wickham said the actions of his staff demonstrated the “wonderful camaraderie” enjoyed at Morebus.
He added: “Our driver Wayne Bowld has endured a hugely challenging time, since his leukaemia diagnosis in January of last year – but he has been bolstered by incredible support from his colleagues.
“Now they are joining together for Stand Up to Cancer in a bid to raise money for funding much-needed research into combating the disease.
“This is a fantastic effort from them all and I speak for everyone at Morebus when I say we are extremely proud of them.”
