Each month we turn the spotlight on one of these incredible people who are an integral part of the organisation.

This month we meet Trustee Rev Jane Burgess.

Why did you become a Trustee?

Because I am excited by the vision of Lewis-Manning and its mission to provide outstanding hospice care and support.

Lewis-Manning is a great organisation, absolutely committed to providing the care patients and families want.

I would like to be able to contribute to their growth and development at this exciting time, as the charity expands their work further into the community where services are needed and wanted.

How long have you been involved with the charity?

I am a new Trustee and have only been in the role for six months.

What’s your career background?

I trained as a nurse and knew early-on during my training that I wanted to work in oncology and palliative care.

I worked first in a specialist oncology hospital and later in a hospice.

While working in a hospice I trained as a counsellor and from there moved to a church-based role heading up the pastoral work and eventually training for ordination in the Church of England.

I currently work as a full time Parish Priest and Assistant Area Dean.

What do you bring to the charity in terms of expertise and knowledge?

I bring to the role pastoral experience from parish experience over many years, which includes supporting people through the end of life, as well as their carers and staff involved in caring roles.

My nursing background in palliative care provides me with some insight, clinical as well as pastoral, into the issues facing patients, relatives and staff.

What is your favourite thing about being a Lewis-Manning Hospice Care Trustee?

I love working with a really enthusiastic and professional group of people who are motivated to really make a difference.

In 2022 we are celebrating our 30th anniversary.

We would love for 30 local businesses to pledge to raise £1,000 each throughout the year so that the charity can raise £30,000 from 30 businesses in our 30th year.

This month we spoke to Trusts Fundraiser, Claire Warren.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Making a difference by winning grants, and after working on my own for many years, the best thing about my job is working with all the staff at Lewis-Manning.

Everyone is so friendly and caring, it really is a pleasure to go to work.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

Don’t avoid asking for help, it isn’t a sign of weakness or a lack of confidence, but shows you are human and willing to collaborate and learn from others.

Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t know.

Last November I learned how to ride a penny farthing.

Describe yourself in 3 words

Kind, trustworthy and indecisive (I am a Libran!).

If you were going to rule the world for the day, what law would you introduce?

Everyone must call someone they have neglected to talk to in a while, or who is living alone.

It’s good to talk and for them to know you care.

Your best place for a holiday is?

Anywhere in Asia – it’s wild on the senses!

Our aim is to help as many local people as possible, who are dealing with a life limiting illness, to live their precious lives well.
