My advice to anyone starting out? Have a plan, don’t give up and don’t let others deflect you

By Staff Reporter editor@dorsetbiznews.co.uk

Published: July 22, 2021 | Updated: 23rd July 2021

Each week we shine the spotlight on a member of Dorset’s business community and ask him, or her, for answers to our part fun/part serious questionnaire. This time…

He doesn’t like his Christian name; gets angry at people who don’t respond to emails; chooses former England and Ipswich Town footballer Kevin Beattie as his childhood hero and would be happy to share a car with anyone but his wife because she “constantly tells me what I’m doing wrong and shouts at me.”

Nigel Reeve, Director, Marketing West and organiser of the Bridport, Dorchester and Poundbury, Lyme Regis, Sherborne and Weymouth and Portland Business Awards, occupies the 20 Questions’ hot seat.

Question: What is your favourite TV show?

Answer: At the moment it’s The Bidding Room, partly because of Nigel Havers who was given the same dreadful Christian name as me. He doesn’t like his and I don’t like mine.

Q: Who would you like to share a car with?

A: Anybody but my wife who constantly tells me what I’m doing wrong and shouts at me.

Q: The best bit of my job is…?

A: Putting on an awards or seminar that goes smoothly. People think they just happen but there’s months of work behind them. It’s a great feeling of satisfaction.

Q: And the worst…?

A: When something does go wrong.

Q: Who was your childhood hero?

A: Kevin Beattie (played for England and Ipswich Town). The best footballer I have ever seen. You will guess I’m a life-long Ipswich Town fan.

Q: What’s your favourite smell?

A: I’m an early riser and walk Basil, the labrador, before anyone else in the village gets up. The fresh morning air heightens the senses. I cannot describe it.

Q: Where’s your favourite place in Dorset?

A: It’s either the coastal path leading into Lyme Regis or going across on the chain ferry from Sandbanks. I cannot choose which I prefer.

Q: What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a career?

A: Have a plan, don’t give up and don’t let others deflect you from what you want to do. Believe me they will try and not always in your best interests.

Q: What was your first record/CD?

A: ‘Hey Paula’ by Paul & Paula, from the early sixties. I was very young!

Q: What gets you angry?

A: People who don’t respond to emails. I don’t mean mass mailers. I mean people you know. There should be an email etiquette. It takes less than a minute to respond so why not do it?

Q: Do you have a favourite piece of music?

A: I’ve an eclectic musical taste and a large classical collection, but my favourite track of all time is the Eagles, ‘Lyin’ Eyes’. Mind you Nat King Cole singing ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’ is a close second.

Q: What are the qualities you look for in a new employee?

A: Empathy. Someone who you can relate to and work with. On the opposite side I try to look out for people who talk a good game but there’s nothing behind it.

Q: What’s your favourite food or dish?

A: Chilli, the hotter the better.

Q: Steamed sponge pudding and custard or a plate of melon?

A: Sponge pudding every time.

Q: Name the best thing about living/working in Dorset?

A: I first came here on holiday when in my teens and stayed all summer living in a garden shed behind a butcher’s shop in Poole. A few years later I worked for a radio station called 2CR in Bournemouth and just loved the area. I made it an ambition to one day move here permanently and I kept to it.

Q: If you were Prime Minister for the day what would be the first thing you do?

A: Simple. Give a pay rise to the frontline NHS staff!

Q: What’s your biggest frustration?

A: Running an events and seminars company during a lockdown.

Q:  Where’s your favourite holiday location?

A: Either St Andrews or Dornoch. Both have great golf courses!

Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

A: I’ve really no idea.

Q: What would you like to be remembered for?

A: Trying to make things happen!
