Each week we shine the spotlight on a member of Dorset’s business community and ask him, or her, for answers to our part fun/part serious questionnaire. This time…

He gets angry at rude people especially when they don’t say thank you; chooses After Life as his top TV show; nominates Weymouth as his favourite place in Dorset and says he’d like to be remembered as ‘a nice bloke with great friends who enabled many youngsters to enjoy sport’.

Tony Bernard, Director and Trustee of the Steve Bernard Foundation, occupies the 20 Questions’ hot seat.

Question: What is your favourite TV show?

Answer: After Life. A brilliant happy/sad take on life and death. Ricky Gervais really hits the right buttons of emotions and humour. A must watch.

Q: Who would you like to share a car with?

A: My son Stevie, but then I wouldn’t want the journey to ever end, so failing that Tom Hanks who is possibly the greatest character film actor in the world and used to visit Bournemouth in the 90’s to see his sister.

Q: The best bit of my job is…?

A: Seeing the pure excitement of the kids with cerebral palsy running for the first time in the racerunner we bought for Poole Athletics Club who, it must be said, have great coaches who are achieving great things in disability sport and helping elite athletes who won Invictus gold medals, Olympians, British, Europeanand& world champions. We have a wealth of sporting talent in Dorset, they just need a little bit of help every so often. And in my day job, making our local roads safer, we all want to get home to our families.

Q: And the worst…?

A: Not being able to help a project/cause for whatever reason. I want to help as many youngsters as possible but sometimes finance restraints stop us .

Q: Who was your childhood hero?

A: Derek Dougan, Wolves & Irish footballer and David Bedford, international long distance runner. I competed at decent levels in both sports and they were both larger than life characters who enhanced their sport.

Q: What’s your favourite smell?

A: Bacon! Nothing beats the smell of bacon especially early morning after a late night.

Q: Where’s your favourite place in Dorset?

A: Weymouth. Although there are a lot of great places in Bournemouth, Weymouth’s seafront is brilliant with something for everyone.

Q: What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a career?

A: Make sure you are embarking on a career that you love rather than just for money. Most people only realise this late in life.

Q: What was your first record/CD?

A: ‘Stoned Love’ by The Supremes. I was a big Motown fan.

Q: What gets you angry?

A: Rude people especially when they don’t say thank you!

Q: Do you have a favourite piece of music?

A: Nimrod by Elgar and ‘Living On The Ceiling’ by Blancmange. I love history and WW2 and Nimrod hits the right emotional heights. The Blancmange song was played at my wedding reception at the Yellow Buses Social Club in Mallard Road (who remembers that club?) 35 years ago after the first song (‘Lady in Red’) when all the men danced the Egyptian Groove!

Q: What are the qualities you look for in a new employee?

A: Good manners and passion.

Q: What’s your favourite food or dish?

A: Pasta/pizza from Bellaggios or a curry from Ali’s, both based in Winton and both are top notch friendly restaurants.

Q: Steamed sponge pudding and custard or a plate of melon?

A: Definitely the steamed sponge and custard.

Q: Name the best thing about living/working in Dorset?

A: We are so lucky to live in a wonderful part of the country with the seaside and the countryside close by. Just lovely!

Q: If you were Prime Minister for the day what would be the first thing you do?

A: Make all train, coach and bus fares really affordable so people do leave their cars at home. If we are serious about our future health we have to start making big sacrifices regarding petrol/diesel vehicles.

Q: What’s your biggest frustration?

A: Irresponsible dog owners who don’t pick up the poo and litterbugs. We live in a beautiful area so why spoil it?

Q:  Where’s your favourite holiday location?

A: Prague. It has everything from culture, history, great beer and partying!

Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

A: Happily retired with good health but still running the charity.

Q: What would you like to be remembered for?

A: Hopefully as a nice bloke with great friends who enabled many youngsters to enjoy sport.
