It’s surprising that Gerard Maguire hasn’t sprouted fins having spent so much time in the water.

Now the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) has recognised the lifelong swimmer’s passion and enthusiasm by appointing him as a Brand Ambassador.

In his new voluntary role Gerard, Operations Director of Individuality Swimming & Fitness, will act as an ambassador for the STA in support of its charitable objectives and brand values.

He’ll use his experience and knowledge to offer assistance to new and existing members.

It’s a big honour from swimming’s national governing body.

Gerard is one of 52 Brand Ambassadors appointed from hundreds of applications.

The 49-year-old, who started swimming at an early age, said: “I can now pass feedback at the local level right through to the top of the STA and, in particular, Dave Candler, CEO.

“I love snorkelling, swim to keep fit and as a family we paddle board quite a lot.

“The STA is a very big organisation both in the UK and across the world in the Far East and countries like Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

“It’s good to be playing my part in the STA.”

Individuality Swimming & Fitness was founded by Gerard’s wife, Kristin, in 2002 and has grown to more than 1,800 clients.

Their ages are from six weeks to 87 years.

Classes range from aqua-natal, parent & baby and aqua sensory through to one-to-one, adult and group swimming.

It uses at least 15 school and hotel swimming pools across Dorset.

Gerard said the pandemic had been “absolutely catastrophic” with zero income for months on end.

“We’ve had to use savings, business support loans and furlough staff but we’ve used the time to add to our qualifications through online training.

“We can’t wait to get back,” he added.

Dave Candler, STA’s CEO, said: “2020 has been a very difficult year for leisure but the STA family has responded positively to bring about a new sense of community, helping each other during these difficult times.

“STA has formally recognised this generous support with the appointment of new Brand Ambassadors.

“Congratulations Gerard. The STA team really look forward to working with you and we thank you for your continued support.”
