RockReef on Bournemouth Pier is delighted to announce the conclusion of its 10th Birthday Mascot Challenge, a community led initiative that brought together local children, partners, and creative talents to celebrate a decade of fun and adventure on the Pier.

The challenge invited children across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole to design a mascot that captured RockReef’s spirit of exploration, courage, and excitement. Over 100 creative and colourful entries were submitted, showcasing the incredible imagination and talent of local young artists.

After careful deliberation by our judging panel, 12-year-old Izabela Kaczynska, was named the winner. Her thoughtful and vibrant mascot design perfectly embodied RockReef’s ethos and was praised for its adventurous spirit and comforting qualities for nervous climbers.

Izabela said “I’m so grateful to my art teacher, Miss Witherington from St. Peter’s School, for encouraging me to enter the RockReef Mascot Challenge. I wanted my mascot to reflect everything that makes RockReef special, its tunnels, caves, and the safety ropes that give everyone the confidence to climb. I also chose bright and inviting colors, inspired by the energy of RockReef. On a personal level, I remember feeling nervous about climbing when I first visited RockReef, and I wanted my mascot to represent the support and encouragement that can help others overcome their fears. ”

To prepare the design for its official debut, Bennett Roberts, a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), worked to finesse the mascot’s final look. Bennett’s expertise helped bring the design to life while staying true to Izabela’s vision.

“We’re incredibly proud of how this challenge brought our community together,” said James Balcazar, Marketing Manager for Adventure Attractions. “From the talented children who entered to our partners at AUB, the Daily Echo, and BCP Council, it’s been a true team effort.”

The winning mascot, along with the top ten designs, will be featured in an exhibition at RockReef, curated by AUB, celebrating the creativity and talent of our local community.

Visit the exhibition at RockReef on Bournemouth Pier and join us in marking this milestone in a way that honours the community spirit that makes RockReef so special.
