An independent haberdashery shop is appealing for public votes after being nominated for a prestigious award.

Haberdasherdo, in Southbourne Grove, Southbourne, has been put forward for the title of best independent haberdashery shop in the British Sewing Awards 2021.

It’s one of just five stores nominated across the whole south west region, stretching from Bristol to Cornwall and right across to Dorset.

Proprietor Jane Scott, pictured right, said she was “chuffed to bits”, particularly as her shop has only been open less than two years.

She added: “It’s a real honour to have been nominated for this prize, especially after everything we’ve all been through with the pandemic.

“We’ve worked really hard to make the shop a welcoming and friendly space where sewers, knitters and crafters of whatever ability can come for help and advice with their projects, as well as all the fabrics, wool and accessories that they need.”

Jane, 54, is assisted by Helen Davies and Alison Kaye in running the shop.

Haberdasherdo also has an extensive website – haberdasherdo.co.uk – which includes an online shop as well as ‘How to’videos and other features.

Nominations for the British Sewing Awards are put forward by readers of Sew magazine.

Lucy Jobber, Editor, said: “The British Sewing Awards gives Sew readers the chance to give back and vote for all of the wonderful brands and personalities that make the craft industry what it is today.

“Not only that, it also shines a light on the independent shops, who offer invaluable advice and service to stitchers of all abilities across the UK – and after the past 18 months, it’s never been more vital.”

Jane said: “It’s great that we’ve been recognised in this way and to actually win would be the icing on the cake.

“But we need your votes!”

Voting opened this month and runs until September 24.

To vote, please go to sewmag.co.uk/awards – the best shop section for the south west is Question 26.
