Malcolm Macintyre came up with his brilliant idea for an anti-theft device nine years ago and then, quite literally, parked it.

It was a simple, yet foolproof, security anchor for his motorbike.

Of course, there are a multitude of anchors sold.

What makes Malcolm’s idea different is that the bolts are inaccessible and hidden when a chain is fitted, making it more difficult for thieves.

That was 2011 and, since then, Malcolm has used the device without a thought.

Until seven weeks ago.

Sitting outside with his partner Nina Guy – the couple have been together since November – the couple were chewing over their future plans.

Malcolm, 46, said: “Nina spotted the ground anchor and said: ‘What’s that?’

“I explained and she said it was a brilliant idea and I should do everything possible to make it into a sellable product.

“That got the ball rolling.”

Malcolm, who has an engineering background, sourced a consignment of steel and also equipment to manufacture the first batch of 20 in his garage.

But what to call it?

He said: “It was late at night and Nina had gone to bed.

“Another security manufacturer has a product called Boss so I thought why not Guvner and then devised a logo?

“When I showed Nina the next day her first words were ‘that’s absolutely brilliant.’”

The finishing touch was the engraving of the initial 20 products, carried out on a new laser machine at Vinny’s Trophies and Engraving in Winton.

So far, so good.

But a friend pointed out that in order for Guvner to have credibility it needed Sold Secure approval.

Owned and administered by the Master Locksmiths Association, a not for profit association, Sold Secure assesses and tests security products.

Information on approved products is then circulated to crime prevention officers, insurance companies, the media, Home Office and the public.

Just five weeks after Malcolm and Nina decided to press ahead with the product, Guvner received four separate security ratings by Sold Secure:

• Motorcycle Diamond
• Ground Anchor Gold
• Bicycle Diamond
• Motor Scooter Gold

“We were very pleased with the Sold Secure ratings which were the highest possible,” said Malcolm, who lives in Wallisdown.

A website has now been created – guvnerproducts.co.uk – and social media accounts set up for Guvner which retails for £59.99.

Malcolm said: “We are now ready to enter the marketplace as a credible manufacturer of a credible product and sell Guvner officially through these and other platforms.

“Guvner is not just for motorcycles but can be used to protect hundreds of thousands of items.

“Bikes, quad bikes, all-terrain vehicles, boats, trailers, lawnmowers, the list just goes on.

“We also plan to talk to bike distributors and the like who are being hit hard by thefts.

“I’m excited and optimistic.

“It’s incredible how far we’ve come in such a short space of time.”
