We’ve been a staple of Southbourne for almost 100 years – and we plan to stay at least another 100 more.
So says Stuart Mason, Sales and Lettings Director at Richard Godsell Estate Agents.
The agency is a sponsored partner of this weekend’s Shake and Stir Vintage Festival on August 7 and 8.
Here Stuart talks about how Richard Godsell has seen Southbourne change over the past century and why people love SoBo so much.

“I’ve been an estate agent since I was 16, so we’re talking over 30 years now! But Richard Godsell as a company has been going far, far longer than that.
“It was first set up in 1928 by Richard Godsell, who was a really well-respected surveyor and auctioneer in the area. We still get people asking to speak to him sometimes, and it would be impressive if they could because he’d be over 110 years old now!

“The business has always been based locally, with branches in Southbourne and Christchurch. We’ve always been a part of the community and are proud of our long-standing reputation as a trusted, local estate agency.
“I think our history and our connection to the area is why most people choose to work with us. We’ve tried to keep hold of as much of our tradition as possible, while adding some modern trimmings of course.
“Southbourne has always been a popular place to live, and it’s not hard to see why, the beach for one is a real selling point of the area.
“In recent years, we’ve seen Southbourne become even more popular, with very high demand for people wanting to move here. It’s experienced fantastic growth and the area has been completely rejuvenated by it all.
“From what we’ve seen, the demand is driven by the high street. Southbourne high street really is the heart of the town and people absolutely love it.
“I have no idea how many cups of coffee are drunk along it every day but I’m sure it’s in the hundreds!
“Whether you drive past at 8am or 8pm, the shops are full of people enjoying themselves. I think it’s that community feel, the independent shops and the bustling social aspect of Southbourne that makes it such a popular choice. It’s really unique!
“Obviously, we can’t see the future, but all the signs seem to point to things carrying on as they are.
“Southbourne doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
“There are new independent shops popping up every day and so many quirky, community events being organised.
“It’s no surprise that people want to be a part of it.”
