EURAC Poole, which specialises in the casting of brake discs and other vehicle components, has put three students through their paces on an innovative new training programme.

The Certificate in Cast Iron Production, Metallurgy and Quality Control is delivered over an 18-month period through a mix of classroom learning, practical sessions and workplace projects.

It’s already provided cost savings and efficiency gains at EURAC, with students successfully implementing several new processes to rectify material failures and reduce defects.

The programme represents a joint venture between The Case Metals Federation (CMF) and the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers (ICME).

Pam Murrell, CEO of the CMF, said: “The value of this course for our industry speaks for itself in the positive responses from all those involved and the fact that the costs of putting employees through it has already been recouped from bottom-line benefits.

“It’s been a real team effort, with input from the CMF, ICME, companies on their specific training needs, then from our tutors and some industry suppliers who’ve helped with technical content and delivering the programme.

“The key to success has been the ‘in-company’ projects at EURAC Poole, which have ensured that businesses get additional value from the course.”

Trainees and tutors came together for a celebration event recently as Antony Evans, Junior Vice President at ICME, handed trainees their certificates.

The EURAC students gave a presentation showcasing how the course had helped them complete a project on ‘investigating a suitable replacement for wire inoculation’.

Amy Worrallo, Training and Quality Manager for ICME, added: “This course was developed in response to a clear need from industry for a practical programme focused on the metallurgy and production of cast irons.

“From meeting the students at the start of the programme, it’s rewarding to witness first-hand the positive impact the training has had not only on the individuals, but the companies involved.”
