Each week we shine the spotlight on a member of Dorset’s business community and ask him, or her, for answers to our part fun/part serious questionnaire. This time…
He’d like to share a car with Lewis Hamilton, has a good cry when ‘Estranged’ by Guns N’ Roses is played, loves Thai food – and, of course, seafood – and chooses Poole Harbour as his favourite place in Dorset. Now there’s a surprise!
Jon Morgan, Owner, Dorset Cruises and BH Fish, takes the 20 Questions’ hotseat.
Question: What is your favourite TV show?
Answer: The Office (UK version, of course). It’s my go-to show if I need to cheer myself up.
Q: Who would you like to share a car with?
A: Lewis Hamilton, just for the sheer adrenaline rush.
Q: The best bit of my job is…?
A: At Dorset Cruises it is gin distillers sending me free bottles of gin all the time. At BH Fish it’s definitely eating lobsters for snacks.
Q: And the worst…?
A: At the moment seeing Dorset Queen sitting on Poole Quay every day when she should be cruising around the harbour with lots of happy guests aboard.
Q: Who was your childhood hero?
A: Paolo Di Canio. That man gave me some of my favourite moments in football. I love his passion and he’s totally bonkers.
Q: What’s your favourite smell?
A: Basil. Even more so when it’s in a Basil Smash cocktail.
Q: Where’s your favourite place in Dorset?
A: Poole Harbour. I’ll never bore of the natural beauty on a sunny day.
Q: What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a career?
A: Work hard and remember that if it were easy, everybody would be doing it.
Q: What was your first record/CD?
A: Nirvana – ‘Bleach’. And I still listen to it every so often to this day. Obviously on Spotify now though.
Q: What gets you angry?
A: People dumping litter on our beautiful beaches.
Q: Do you have a favourite piece of music?
A: My music tastes are so varied, so it totally depends on my mood. Tina Turner – ‘Proud Mary’ if I’m getting myself psyched up and into party mode, Guns N’ Roses – ‘Estranged’ if I fancy a bit of a cry.
Q: What are the qualities you look for in a new employee?
A: Passion and common sense.
Q: What’s your favourite food or dish?
A: I lived in Thailand for a couple of years and absolutely love Thai food. Obviously, I’m a big seafood fan too.
Q: Steamed sponge pudding and custard or a plate of melon?
A: I don’t eat desserts and often order another starter after a main meal instead, but based on the choices, I’d go for the melon.
Q: Name the best thing about living/working in Dorset?
A: Dorset is literally the most beautiful place in the UK. We are so lucky to live here, especially in the current situation we all find ourselves in at the moment.
Q: If you were Prime Minister for the day what would be the first thing you do?
A: Apologise.
Q: What’s your biggest frustration?
A: At the moment it is the restrictions on our everyday life. I know some of them are necessary, but I really miss hugging my family, socialising, going to the football, concerts and holidays.
Q: Where’s your favourite holiday location?
A: I lived in Barcelona for three years and absolutely love the city. It has everything: amazing beaches, stunning architecture, great food and a vibrant night life.
Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?
A: Hopefully laying on a beach with a cocktail in my hand.
Q: What would you like to be remembered for?
A: Dorset Cruises is all about creating special memories for people on their birthdays, wedding days etc. It’s nice to know that I have been involved in making sure those events went to plan, hopefully exceeded expectations and will be remembered for all the right reasons.
