A contract to process household, commercial and litter bin waste more sustainably has been awarded to New Earth Solutions (Canford) based in Poole.

The contract, awarded by BCP Council, covers 48k tonnes of waste from 110,000 properties in the Bournemouth and Christchurch areas.

The majority of the waste from the Poole area is already being treated at New Earth Solutions’ Canford facility under a separate third-party contract with Viridor Waste Management.

The treatment process at New Earth Solutions extracts metals and a compost like output from the waste.

The remainder is processed into a refuse derived fuel which will then be sent to a new energy from waste facility at Bridgwater, Somerset.

BCP Council says this ensures the majority of the waste is treated in the south west region, creating a lower carbon output compared to transporting waste long distances.

Cllr Mark Anderson, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for the Environment, Cleansing and Waste, pictured right, said: “I am delighted that New Earth Solutions have been awarded this contract that was evaluated for both environmental quality and value for money.

“We are passionate about creating a sustainable environment and this contract will help the council meet its declared zero carbon climate and ecological emergency targets.

“We are already very successful in managing our waste and, despite Covid-19 affecting how waste was managed worldwide in 2020/21, we still recycled 51.3 per cent of our household waste with 87 per cent of all our waste being diverted from landfill.

“As all of the major waste contracts for BCP Council have now been aligned to potentially end in 2027 this gives us an opportunity to further develop our long-term environmental strategies.’’

The new contract will run for three years from next Wednesday, September 1, 2021, with options to extend for a further three years if required.

The majority of the waste has already been processed at the Canford facility for a number of years.
