Top award for construction company that used the time provided by pandemic to good effect

A family construction business founded 28 years ago has landed a top award.

Composite Profiles UK Ltd was named Best Metal Decking Contractor 2020 in the Global Business Awards.

The awards, staged by Corporate Vision Magazine, recognise and reward individuals and businesses across the globe.

To be crowned a winner, the judges look for evidence of extensive expertise and commitment to client service, together with innovation and a determination to succeed.

Mark Norton, Managing Director, pictured left, said: “I’m delighted that our amazing team has been recognised for their dedication and their commitment to excellent service.

“It has been a very challenging year for many businesses and it’s brilliant to end 2020 on a high.”

Poole-based Composite Profiles supplies and installs composite metal floor and structural roof decking.

The brand, founded by Mark’s father, Roy, in 1992, now employs 23 staff and has an annual turnover of around £5m.

Earlier this year the company was recognised by Investors in People (IIP) with its highest Platinum accreditation. The team is pictured with the award.

The global business award comes after Mark challenged his staff to see through the ‘fog’ of Covid by concentrating on a strategy rooted in positivity, focused on solutions and with a growth mindset.

Helped by a healthy cashflow – a legacy of the financial lessons learned from surviving the 2008/9 recession – Mark said: “For the first time, we had time.

“Most people spend way too much time ‘being busy’ and doing ‘urgent’ things without really stepping back and questioning how important it is.”

The time was used by Composite Profiles to action some of its long-term plans, all too often put on the backburner.

As a result, and in the middle of a national lockdown and using a virtual team with a geographical spread from Australia to Poole, the company launched its bespoke GRP void protection system wHOLE.Protect™.

The product, pictured right, combines the benefits of anti-slip GRP moulded grating with bespoke, specially adapted edge shutter eliminating the need for scaffolding and handrail systems around internal voids.

Composite Profiles also managed to achieve its highest ever order month by focusing on client relations.

Mark said: “The unexpected gift that Covid-19 gave was a lesson in time management.

“Ask yourself this: when you have all the time in the world, what’s the best you can do with it?

“Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t, and it will lead to great achievements.”
