Truly paw-some: Ice cream maker lands UK distribution deal for its doggie frozen treat

Published: May 25, 2021 | Updated: 26th May 2021

It’s enough to get the tails of the nation’s estimated 10.1m dogs wagging in unison.

An artisan ice cream manufacturer has landed a major distribution deal for its tasty organic frozen treat for dogs.

Bridport-based Baboo Gelato has secured a listing and distribution deal for Doggy Doggy Yum Yum with pet wholesaler, Pedigree Wholesale.

It means that pet shops across the UK can buy directly from Pedigree Wholesale with Baboo Gelato able to roll out the product nationwide.

Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is made with peanut butter and bananas which Baboo Gelato says dogs find hard to resist.

It uses coconut milk instead of dairy so it’s kinder to dogs’ stomachs.

The ice cream is 100 per cent organic, natural and contains probiotics which come from the live yoghurt, vitamins C and B, iron, magnesium, copper and potassium from the coconut and bananas.

The peanut butter is pure and so does not contain sugar, xylitol or palm oil.

There are no artificial flavourings, colours or refined sugars.

Baboo Gelato believes that Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is the first frozen treat to meet all the dietary and environmental criteria as it is:

  • Organic
  • Dairy free
  • Gluten free
  • Suitable for vegans (both human and canines)
  • Environmentally friendly as the container tub is fully recyclable.

Sam Hanbury, Founder of the Doggy Doggy Yum Yum brand, said: “We’ve been staggered by the demand for Doggy Doggy since its launch in 2019.

“It’s been frustrating to have to turn down so many lovely pet shops who wanted to stock us, and we just didn’t have the national distribution.

“This all changes with Pedigree Wholesale and we’re delighted to be working with such a well-known and respected company.

“Much of our sales come from our ice cream kiosks across the Dorset coast which help us to know exactly what customers want.

“This is how Doggy Doggy Yum Yum came about.

“We found that people were buying ice cream for their dogs, and we were concerned that dogs are somewhat lactose intolerant.

“We experimented throughout 2019 with different ingredients, before creating an entirely organic and lactose free product.

“Fed as an occasional tasty treat, Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is the perfect way to reward your dog after a long walk in the countryside or on the beach.

“We are finding limitless demand during the summer not just from pet retailers, but from so many dog friendly cafés, pubs, restaurants, and tourist destinations.

“It just seems that most savvy people involved in food and drink want some of the poochie pound.

“We can help with a classy product, well supported with eye catching and iconic branding.”

Baboo Gelato was started by husband and wife team, Sam and Annie Hanbury, pictured left, after they moved to Dorset in 2012 and bought a house with an overflowing garden and orchard.

Inspired by their fruit, Annie went to Bologna to train as a professional gelatiere, before setting up a small artisanal manufacturing kitchen.

They opened their first kiosk in West Bay and were overwhelmed by the response from the community.

Local restaurants and pubs then clamoured for their product; other kiosks wanted to rebrand to carry Baboo Gelato and shops requested them to make ice cream in tubs.

The award-winning company has doubled in size each year ever since and now has added kiosks in Lyme Regis and Weymouth.

It attributes its success to quality ingredients, sourced locally where possible, and not using flavourings, colours or pastes in the manufacture of the ice cream.

Family-owned Pedigree Wholesale has been trading since 1972 and stocks more than 12,500 products which are delivered by its fleet of 30-plus vehicles from five strategically located distribution centres.

  • Cafés, pubs, restaurants and pet shops wishing to stock Doggy Doggy Yum Yum in the Dorset area can order directly from Baboo Gelato by contacting Jessica Chandler, Head of Sales, email: hello@doggydoggyyumyum.com or tel: 01308 488629.
