University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) has launched a new diagnostic imaging centre at Health Sciences University (HSU) in Boscombe, expanding capacity for NHS diagnostic services.
The centre, located on the ground floor of HSU’s Clinic building, includes a state-of-the-art CT scanner and ultrasound facilities, providing vital imaging for healthcare professionals.
This collaboration sees HSU leasing 130 square metres of space to UHD, allowing the NHS to increase access to diagnostic services, particularly in areas of deprivation.
The new centre is part of NHS England’s Dorset Community Diagnostic Centre initiative, with funding dedicated to developing this key facility.
HSU, which was renamed from AECC University College earlier this year, has been integral to the project.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Lesley Haig highlighted the long-standing partnership with UHD: “We are delighted to support UHD in this venture. Our relationship, which started during Covid-19 recovery, continues to grow, and this new centre is a great addition for patients and students alike.”
UHD Chief Operating Officer, Mark Mould, also expressed his enthusiasm for the new facility: “This partnership allows us to strategically place diagnostic centres where they are most needed, ensuring that care reaches all communities. The educational links at HSU further strengthen our local healthcare workforce.”
Since 2021, the collaboration has seen 10,000 ultrasound scans performed on-site, with further plans for a Radiography Academy to train future radiographers in Dorset.
