The transformational Weymouth Station Gateway project was recognised with two prestigious awards at the 2023 Institute of Civil Engineers’ (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards.

Ten project awards and two individual trophies were presented at the ceremony held in Bristol on Friday, 10 November.

The annual ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards, held in association with Kier BAM this year, honoured standout projects and professionals across the region. TV presenter Rob Bell hosted the gala event.

The £1.2 million renovation, led by Dorset Coast Forum in partnership with Dorset Council and funded by South Western Railway, aimed to create a more open and welcoming environment at Weymouth train station.

Designed by engineering firm WSP, the project redesigned the station entrance, promoted sustainable transport options, and reduced anti-social behaviour. It also included the creation of a new Pocket Park in a former section of track.

In addition to the Community Award, the Weymouth Station Gateway also received the Judges’ Special Award.

The judging panel was impressed with the collaborative partnership between the local community, rail company, and transport authority that brought the project to fruition.

They described it as an outstanding example of infrastructure that unites communities and enhances daily life.

Also in Dorset, the prize for best new build project under £8 million went to Durley Chine Environmental Hub in Bournemouth, built by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council.

The sustainable and innovative beachside facility was praised for encouraging recycling. Judges remarked that the hub combined creativity and engineering to produce an inspiring, eco-friendly space.

Miranda Housden, ICE South West Regional Director, said: “The ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards 2023 showcased a strong field of entries, marking a competitive year that underlines the region’s depth of expertise and achievement.

“These amazing projects are taking on some of our most significant regional challenges. And with the talent of our apprentices and graduates, the future for civil engineering in the South West looks very promising.

“Congratulations to all who participated this year.”
