Independent wine merchant Jim Dawson, Owner/Director of the Jolly Vintner Too wine shop in Bournemouth, occupies the 20 Questions’ hot seat.

Question: What is your favourite TV show?

Answer: Antiques Road Trip.

Q: Who would you like to share a car with?

A: Sir David Attenborough.

Q: The best bit of my job is…?

A: Tasting wines to look for new and interesting wines to stock. Also tasting wines and whiskies with customers.

Q: And the worst…?

A: The public’s perception of the wine trade as being snobbish (it can be at times). This is something I have tried to debunk over last 40 odd years.

Q: Who was your childhood hero?

A: Peter Brown, Scottish No. 8 Forward. I styled my rugby playing on his.

Q: What’s your favourite smell?

A: Champagne.

Q: Where’s your favourite place in Dorset?

A: Alum Chine Beach – my kids love it there.

Q: What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a career?

A: Investigate the career fully before committing and learn as much as one can about it. Work hard.

Q: What was your first record/CD?

A: James Taylor – Sweet Baby James LP.

Q: What gets you angry?

A: Many things but cyclists on pavements.

Q: Do you have a favourite piece of music?

A: Mahler’s 8th Symphony.

Q: What are the qualities you look for in a new employee?

A: Keen to learn, hardworking, consistent, honest and personable.

Q: What’s your favourite food or dish?

A: Mince and tatties or fish pie.

Q: Steamed sponge pudding and custard or a plate of melon?

A: Steamed pudding.

Q: Name the best thing about living/working in Dorset?

A: Space to breathe, pace of life, the people and lots of variety of leisure pursuits.

Q: If you were Prime Minister for the day what would be the first thing you do?

A: Abolish the House of Lords.

Q: What’s your biggest frustration?

A: Stupidity.

Q:  Where’s your favourite holiday location?

A: Val d’Isere or the Maldives.

Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

A: Retired hopefully and living back in Scotland.

Q: What would you like to be remembered for?

A: Being direct, honest, truthful, loyal and knowledgeable.
