A print business launched with less than £250 and which now has over 1,000 active clients ranging from independents to large corporations and agencies is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Weymouth-based Print Shop Express Ltd is an independent creative printer, sign maker and design studio with a four-strong team.

Founder and Managing Director James Collins was employed in the film and TV industry, working for the BBC, ITV and some of the UK’s largest production companies, for ten years before a serious injury put his career on hold.

However, after a few months with very limited mobility but bills still needing to be paid, he turned to another skill set and area of knowledge and set up Simply Design, offering a design service to local businesses.

After being asked if could also offer a printing service, he scraped together enough funds to purchase a small SRA3 printer and began to offer a design and print service.

It led to the creation of Print Shop Express Ltd with a move to new premises and developing a website offering print and signage to a UK audience.

James said: “From this point, every spare penny was invested into building a plant list that could offer the best quality output, which is absolutely necessary when only perfection is good enough.

“This ethos of reinvestment still continues to this day, which means that production quality and deadlines are both controllable, which is vital for our clients.”

Recent investments include the newest Ricoh digital production press available which can handle anything from business cards through to A4 landscape booklets.

The business has also installed the latest technology offered by Roland for wide format production, taking care of everything from stickers to shop fascias and vehicle graphics.

James was joined by his wife, Holly, pictured left, in 2020.

He said: “Holly came into the business with a decade of print experience in her own right, working in print management and production roles in both public and private sectors.

“Having  vast experience in client relations and a comprehensive technical knowledge, she has brought an invaluable additional depth to the business.

“This has been a crucial factor, not only in the day to day management of the business, but also navigating and driving the business forward during a two year period which has been challenging for all business owners.

“When I started Print Shop Express Ltd, I had no idea that it would grow in such a positive way.

“We are completely independent with no outside investment and, despite starting up at the tail end of a recession and more recently navigating a global pandemic, we have become the trusted option for so many businesses and our success is attributed to them.

“We are immensely proud of our local and national client base.

“We strive to put time, effort and care into them and their businesses and will continue to do so into the future.”
