It can be a tough and lonely life running your own business.

But now a new mentoring scheme for health and wellness therapists has been launched to provide one-to-one tailored support.

And already one of its first clients has doubled her monthly turnover.

Remedy Business Solutions is the brainchild of Jemma Sandell.

The advanced massage and skin therapist has worked in the massage and beauty industry for more than 12 years.

A London salon owner for eight years, she’s now the owner of Relax and Remedy, operating out of Ferndown’s Arena Business Centre.

Jemma, 36, said: “I’ve experience of managing a large team of staff including apprentices, receptionists and all manner of therapists.

“I’ve worked freelance at salons and spas.

“The last three years I’ve spent as a solo therapist, building my business from scratch again after moving to Dorset.

“So much of the health and wellness industry is made up by solo therapists – chiropractors, reflexologists, osteopaths, beauty therapists and massage specialists working on their own.

“That can be a tough and lonely place with no sounding board or business buddy to check in with.

“I’m very aware of the stress and challenges faced in this industry, whether someone is just starting out on their business journey or perhaps looking at moving it from a sideline career to a full-time business.

“Others who’ve been working as a solo therapist for some time may feel fed up and need motivational support.”

The one-to-one mentoring programme works online with an initial free half-hour session followed by a six-month package of support tailored to meet clearly defined goals.

Jemma said: “Increasing your financial turnover.

“Getting that ‘to do’ list done.

“Having someone to share with when the going gets tough.

“When you work on your own and your bookings go quiet, it’s easy to get a negative mindset.

“I can help people to utilise that ‘white space’ to build their business by working on it rather than just in it.

“There’s also all the skills associated with social media and marketing that can be overwhelming.”

One of the first to sign up to the mentoring programme was Nina Callaghan.

She runs her own massage and reflexology business in Corfe Mullen and says she has already doubled her turnover.

Nina said: “Last month I took twice as much as I did the month before I started working with Jemma.

“I’ve also taken on a new treatment which is something I was hesitating about.

“Jemma has given me the ability to be able to advertise it properly.

“I now have more confidence in how social media works and have a more cohesive presence online.

“I have increased my reviews which has had an impact on the amount of new clients I’m getting.

“I can now move forward to grow and develop the business in the direction that suits me.”
