One of the tips from Kate James to anyone thinking of following her lead in the legal world.

The former secretary is the new Managing Partner of Porter Dodson, 17 years after joining the Dorset and Somerset law firm.

She takes on the role from Rob Fox, pictured left, who retires in April after more than 35 years with the practice.

Kate, 47, joined Porter Dodson in 2005, qualifying in 2007.

She was appointed to the partnership in 2013 and took on the roles of Head of the Wellington office and Head of the Private Client Team.

Kate’s in-depth knowledge and passion for marketing led to the hosting of seminars advising on Inheritance Tax and succession planning.

Her promotion to Managing Partner represents the pinnacle of her career.

Kate said: “I am so proud, as are my family.

“Rob will be a really tough act to follow but he has been fully supportive of me, as has the Board.

“I plan to continue working with many of my clients, offering the same excellent advice that they have always received.

“I will be working with the Board and partners to implement the firm’s plans for continued growth.

“Hiring good people is essential.

“Working with the right people is key, and I want to take everyone with us on the journey ahead.”

And those tips for anyone planning to follow in her footsteps?

Kate said: “There will always be obstacles in your way.

“You have to stick your head above the parapet and get noticed.

“Be commercial, put yourself out there, do the business development, work hard and have confidence in yourself.

“With the support of those around you, you can achieve your goals.”

Porter Dodson employs nearly 200 people.

Its eight offices include Bridport, Dorchester, Poundbury, Sherborne and Sturminster Newton in Dorset.
