Local families charity Home-Start Wessex has welcomed Belinda Hewett as their new Head of Operations. The newly created role comes as the charity works to meet a sharp rise in demand.

Last year, Home-Start Wessex supported 402 families, its highest number ever, marking a 63 per cent increase year on year.

In response to the closure of Home-Start West Dorset in October 2023 due to funding challenges, Home-Start Wessex swiftly expanded its services to cover the West Dorset region, including towns like Dorchester, Weymouth, and Bridport.

Belinda, who brings with her 40 years of NHS experience, was most recently Matron of Women’s Health Gynaecology at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. Her experience in leading her team through change while maintaining high standards of care is expected to be invaluable to her new role. She also has experience collaborating with charities, offering outreach support via the NHS.

Kathy Fryatt-Banks, CEO of Home-Start Wessex, expressed her confidence in Belinda’s appointment, saying: “Belinda has demonstrated a commitment to managing and leading teams through significant change. Her solutions-focused approach will be instrumental as we continue adapting to the growing needs of families and expand our services.”

Belinda shared her enthusiasm for the role: “I believe wholeheartedly in Home-Start Wessex’s mission. As a parent and someone with experience supporting vulnerable women, I understand the pressures faced by families. I am excited to help the team maintain and grow our services across West Dorset.”

Founded in 1995, Home-Start Wessex has supported over 3,500 families and 10,000 children across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, and surrounding areas. The charity’s volunteers provide advice and practical support to families facing challenges, including poor mental health, bereavement, and domestic abuse.

Demand for their services continues to grow. Anyone able to volunteer for 2-3 hours a week is encouraged to get in touch via [email protected].
