Bottoms up! 27-year-old Wilfrid's gin finds a place among the top 5% in the world

A 27-year-old gin producer from North Dorset has won an impressive Gold Medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition, scoring 95/100 for his signature spiced gin.

The accolade for Shroton Fair Gin, run by founder Wilfrid Shon, places the distillery in the top 5 per cent worldwide, with only 50 out of 1000 gins across the globe able to claim the award. It was one of only four contemporary gins in the whole of the UK to win gold.

The winning Gin, Zummit Dry®, impressed the judges, who described it as: “Fragrant and herbaceous with enticing spiced aromas of cumin, paprika and cayenne. The palate has bright citrus highlights with soft juniper and herbal undertones, culminating in a soft finish”

Distilled in nano-batches outside Blandford in North Dorset, this startup has also just scooped up another award at The Global Spirits Masters, winning a “Master” medal –only given to the top 10% of winners.

For founder, Wilfrid, 27, this is the ultimate validation.

“Having created this recipe from scratch aged 24 during COVID lockdowns – guided solely by the desire to craft a Gin I could be proud of – this is the ultimate achievement for any distiller in their entire career,” he explained.

Asked what what products he might be considering in the future, Wilfrid said: “I want to take my time to create something really exciting instead of just churning out yet another citrus or juniper-forward expression – but I do have a few ideas up my sleeve for Christmas!”

Looking ahead, Shroton Fair Gin® is poised to make a significant impact over the rest of the year.

“As well as exhibiting at events across the County every weekend and boosting our online presence on Amazon, we’ve recently expanded our refill option from just 70cl to 3 Litres.

“This helps save nearly 3KG of glass per box from being unnecessarily sent to the incinerator to be broken down.

“Instead, customers can simply refill and re-use their empty bottle from our 3L Gin box— the perfect solution to cut down on glass waste for pubs & bars (and our regulars!)”

To get hold of some of their award-winning spiced Gin, head online to: shrotonfairgin.co.uk or Amazon for free delivery.

To save on glass, you can also pop in to Ash Farm Courtyard, DT11 8PW, every Friday & Saturday 09:00-12:00 with an empty bottle & grab a refill.
