A fundraising walk along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is set to raise vital funds for grassroots charities that support older people.

Ninety-five participants will trek the scenic path later this month to combat loneliness and social isolation among the elderly.

The event is organized by McCarthy Stone, a Bournemouth-based retirement community developer, aiming to raise over £12,000 for the McCarthy Stone Foundation.

This independent charity backs initiatives in deprived areas, enhancing engagement for those over 65.

Since its inception in December 2020, the Foundation has supported over 400 grassroots charities, with plans to distribute around £400,000 in 2024. This funding will aid thousands of older individuals experiencing isolation.

The walk splits participants into two groups: one will cover 48km from Weymouth to Swanage, passing landmarks like Durdle Door and Kimmeridge Bay.

The other group will join at Lulworth Cove for the final 29km. The Weymouth group faces a challenging ascent of over 1,517m, exceeding the height of Ben Nevis.

Fifteen checkpoints, manned by volunteers, will offer encouragement, water, and treats. Local instructors from Land & Wave will ensure smooth operations. The event has already raised over £10,000 through JustGiving, with McCarthy Stone matching donations to potentially double the funds to £24,000.

Participants will celebrate at The Centre in Swanage, with proceeds benefiting the Swanage and Purbeck Development Trust. Previous beneficiaries include Somerford ARC Community Centre’s ADaPT Café and Winton Hope Community Church’s social group.

Julia Laister, Foundation Coordinator, said: “We are hugely grateful to our colleagues at McCarthy Stone, who live the values of community and achieving together, for all their generous support.

“Everyone taking part has shown an exceptional level of commitment and deserves a huge round of applause. Through these initiatives, generously backed by the McCarthy Stone Group, we can continue to strengthen communities and provide support to thousands more older people.”

Shane Paull, McCarthy Stone’s Chief Operating Officer, who will also walk, added: “I’m delighted to be taking part in the sponsored walk – it’s a real testament to everyone’s commitment and tenacity at McCarthy Stone.

“Although it’s undoubtedly going to be a challenge, the payoff will be worth tenfold, and the opportunity to experience such a scenic route unrivalled.”

McCarthy Stone has multiple developments across Dorset, including Stour Gate in Blandford Saint Mary and The Old Market Village in Wimborne, opening this Autumn.
