The Dorset Welcome Fund has opened its doors again, offering grants to voluntary groups and charities supporting asylum seekers and refugees in the county.

Backed by contributions from Dorset Council, BCP Council, and community foundation fundholders, grants of up to £5,000 are available to those helping people settle in Dorset.

Ellie Maguire, the fund’s grants manager, explained the focus: “We are particularly interested in funding activities that promote wellbeing, community cohesion, and participation in local life—such as events to tackle isolation or celebrate cultural heritage, especially for young people.”

She added that support could also extend to English lessons, mental health services, and practical help like clothing and mobile phones.

Earlier this year, the fund awarded over £57,000 to ten local groups. Weymouth’s As One Theatre Company received £4,950 to establish a Ukrainian Art Therapy group, providing a safe space for psychological healing.

Jane McKell, the theatre’s artistic director, said the group helps participants deal with trauma and supports single parents. “We plan to tour the county, using a mix of languages and even sign language to build bridges with the wider community,” McKell said.

Citizens Advice Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch secured £5,000 to continue its immigration advice clinic for refugees at Bournemouth Library. “We’ve helped more than 400 people navigate their immigration status and take the next steps,” said Tom Lund, head of operations.

Michael Hancock, director of Community Alliances in Poole, said a £4,500 grant would fund advocacy sessions and monthly meals prepared by families of all nationalities. “Our activities will address isolation and support people in building local support networks,” Hancock said.

Grant Robson, Dorset Community Foundation’s CEO, emphasised the importance of the fund: “With recent unrest and hostility towards refugees, it’s vital to support work that showcases Dorset’s compassion and community spirit.”
