Greendale Construction, a Poole-based chartered building firm, is nearing completion of its 34-week project to restore the historic Newbery Steps building at Dean Park Cricket Ground.
The structure, once a dilapidated storage facility, is being meticulously rebuilt to reflect its original design, while incorporating modern, environmentally friendly upgrades.
The restoration involves reusing several original features, including floorboards repurposed as external cladding, reinstated sarking boards, and original timber shutters used as decorative elements.
A non-original lean-to toilet block has been removed to maintain the authenticity of the building’s design.
The project also includes the addition of a new timber glulam structure with a curved zinc roof, designed by Footprint Architects of Bournemouth.
This feature pays homage to the original barrel-vault structure of the Newbery Steps, while significantly enhancing the building’s structural integrity and environmental performance.
New mechanical and electrical installations, including an air source heat pump for underfloor heating, will ensure the building meets modern standards. The interior will also receive new finishes throughout, bringing the building up to date while preserving its historical charm.

The project, which began in January, is scheduled for completion by the end of September.
