‘Let’s Brew This!’ – Bournemouth Samaritans fight back against “Blue Monday”

Most of us have heard of Blue Monday – said to be the most depressing day of the year.

Bournemouth Samaritans

While people are contending with winter weather, the post-Christmas slump, and the cost-of-living pressures, Samaritans of Bournemouth and District is keen to reinforce that there’s actually no such thing.

The suicide prevention charity has been campaigning for a long time to dispel the myth – which actually has its roots in an advertising campaign in 2005 – arguing that it could discourage people from seeking life-changing help.

This year, Bournemouth Samaritans aimed to turn the day into something positive by running Brew Monday, encouraging friends and family to stay connected by having a cuppa and a catch up.

Between 8am – 4pm, volunteers from the charity were in Bournemouth Rail Station, teaming up with South Western Rail staff to hand out teabags and chat to passengers about the power of connecting.

Samaritans of Bournemouth and District Branch Director Charlie said: “At Samaritans, we’re consistently busy responding to a call for help every 10 seconds, every hour of every day of the year.

“We know that people find life difficult at all times of the year, not just one day in January. And when they do, it’s important that they reach out for support.

“Blue Monday sounds very negative, instead we’re celebrating Brew Monday and encouraging friends and family to check in with one another over a cuppa. Even small moments of human connection like this can play a big role in helping people who are currently struggling.”

Ben Jennings, South Western Railway Flagship Duty Station Manager said he “was delighted to host the Brew Monday annual event on Monday 15 January welcoming Bournemouth Samaritans volunteers to talk with staff and passengers alike.

“Brew Monday is a great way to encourage people to reach out and talk – over a cup of tea or any other refreshment.  We look forward to hosting Bournemouth Samaritans volunteers again”.
