Greendale Construction Limited, has completed a major restoration contract on the Old Town Hall for Christchurch Town Council.

The comprehensive remedial works, which commenced in September 2023, were necessary to address the deteriorating roof and stonework of the Old Town Hall after concerns over the corrosion of lead.

The grade II listed historic building, also known as The Mayor’s Parlour, has had external stonework and building repairs, roofing work, and lead work on the top elevation.

Internally, the Old Town Hall has benefitted from a refurbishment with new bathrooms, kitchen, carpets, and decoration.

A high level, ladder beam designed scaffold was erected to allow hoisting of replacement heavy stone elements at roof level.  Ladder beams are a common form of scaffolding, and as their name suggests, resemble a ladder with two tubular rails and parallel rungs.

Rob Hooker, Director, Greendale Construction said: “This has been a very satisfactory project to work on with Elcock Associates for Christchurch Town Council.

“The Old Town Hall in Christchurch is a prominent and striking building, used for many civic events throughout the year.  Our talented team has skilfully restored and refurbished an important part of Christchurch’s history.

“Greendale is delighted to have been part of bringing the hall back to its former glory, where it will now be used as a vibrant hub for the community for many years to come.”

James Atkinson, Acting Town Clerk, said: “The remedial work and restoration of the Old Town Hall was a huge undertaking that I am proud to have achieved under the Town Council.

“This is the largest project the Town Council has worked on since its inception in 2019 following the local government reorganisation. We are delighted to have secured the future of this iconic High Street landmark with thanks to the fantastic work of Greendale Construction.”
