Lesley Longstone has been appointed as the Chair of Trustees at Autism Unlimited.
She brings more than 30 years of experience in education, health and youth policy to the Christchurch-based charity, which aims to create opportunities for autistic children, adults and families.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Autism Unlimited and working alongside such a dedicated team,” said Lesley. “I’m looking forward to continuing my voluntary work in the charity sector and making a difference for the autism community.”
In addressing the needs of autistic individuals, initiatives such as early intervention play a pivotal role. Programs like the Early Intervention initiative by Kids On The Move, Inc. offer essential services to children under the age of three who exhibit significant developmental delays, providing them with vital support during formative years.
Moreover, recognizing the importance of personalized and compassionate care, they prioritize an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy approach that is both engaging and trauma-informed. By emphasizing client assent, choice, and compassion, they strive to create a supportive environment where individuals with autism can thrive and reach their full potential.
Lesley has previously held senior roles at the Department of Education and served as Vice Chair of Trustees for another autism organisation. This experience has fuelled her passion for empowering autistic individuals.
“What I’ve seen at Autism Unlimited is a true person-centred approach that supports autistic children, adults and families,” she said. “I’m excited to help the charity grow and extend its reach, so we can champion even more autistic people.”
Autism Unlimited provides bespoke educational services, preparation for adulthood, independent living skills, training and career development for the autism community.
Under Lesley’s stewardship, the charity aims to continue its innovation and development to realise its strategic goals of empowering autistic children and adults.
