Dorchester developers RTI recently welcomed NHS staff to their new homes at Barrack House, a short walk from Dorset County Hospital.

The nine new apartments have been developed on a dilapidated brownfield site – formerly home to the town’s historic army barracks – as part of the £2.4 million Barrack Quarter regeneration project.

Malcolm Curtis, chief executive of RTI’s parent company Redtale Holdings, spoke of the ‘lengthy and occasionally frustrating planning journey’ to get to this point – but said it was ‘exciting to see the first key workers and their families move in’.

“As a Dorset based company, we’re proud to play our part in supporting the local community and economy, with high quality accommodation for such essential employees”, he added.

“The development of Barrack House shows perfectly how an infill development on a brownfield site can be seamlessly integrated into a sensitive and historic setting, while providing essential housing.”

Barrack House takes the form of an L-shaped red-brick building with buff bounding, open black metal balconies and slate rooves, echoing the old 19th-century military buildings.

It shares Barrack Quarter with RTI’s headquarters at Vespasian House, where they’ve secured planning consent for a residential extension and mixed-use build featuring apartments and commercial space.

The project was supported by Thrive Architects, Albion Planning Consultants, Horizon and BCM Builds.
